Does anyone have any experience using Ammonium Nitrate (AKA - Urea or Nitrogenous Fertilizer) as diesel fuel?

I have a friend who claims to be involved in the R & D of dissolving 1/3 ammonium nitrate with 2/3 water, plus a couple of other things to keep it from crystalizing in cold weather, and running diesel engines on it. The claim is that the have run a large diesel transport truck for over 40,000kms on long-hauls using this "fuel" with the only problem being crystalization around the injectors in colder weather.

I cannot help you there, but it probably would work, nonetheless someone out there knows the combination?

Ammonium Nitrate is now illegal to own, because mixed with diesel and a detonator will go bang!!!

Hi Kerry

So are you in the US? And I take it that that is where it is illegal to own ammonium nitrate?

I now live in Australia and here it is still available in fertilizer concentration and I believe that I can still get it through my business, we manufacturer cleaning chemicals and ammonium nitrate can be used in many of our formulations.

The beauty of the whole scenario is that unlike making bio-diesel, this would appear to be simply take ammonium nitrate, add water and a couple of other things and you're done. Perfect for someone like me who already has the mixing equipment.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to stop the crystallization on injectors in cold weather?

Jay, Sorry, it's not illegal to own, but it's illegal to buy without a good reason. Ammonium Nitrate, diesel fuel, Potassium Permanganate together and a detonator makes a very lethal bomb?

Jay, try Methanol benzene, that may stop the fuel from crystallization, Okay.

This is very interesting. I am going to try it in our lab, I hop it works. The only problem with ammonium nitrate that it is expensive to produce, but we might produce it using genetically engineered bacteria. I hope if we could produce it from compost as a renewable energy.

Hello, Jay! The subject deeply concern me. I have my own observations about using ammonia nitrate as "fuel" . Have anymore news from that R&D team?
