Juicing Recipes – Dandelion Greens, Comfrey And Nettle Leaf

If you and I were trapped in the forest and we were thirsty / starving and all of a sudden a juicer parachuted in from our sponsors and nothing else was around… how would we survive? (Think Juicing Games)

We would juice weeds! (Not Juicing Marijuana.)

We would juice wild greens silly. I’m sure you’ve seen them hanging out like the red headed step child in the Whole Foods market begging for attention, often to be overlooked by the much more popular Lenny The Lacinto Kale.

Lenny Lacinto

Pfft. “Kale is the new beef!” Over and over this new slogan plays in the Dandelion greens little head.

How do you think she feels?

Poor girl.

Secretly knowing that she deserves much more. Powerful and packed with a potent punch of phytonutrients…

EVEN MORE NUTRIENTS THAN JUICING KALE!

The humble and overlooked Dandelion Green and her friends Comfrey and Stinging Nettles are often meditating in the corner talking about, how one day the secret will get out and they will have to remain ego-less.

Now let’s put our juicing caps on shall we?

Don’t know what juicing these wild greens are good for?

Have you ever taken a walk outside and seen the little yellow flowers that seem to pop up over night?

Or have you ever been stung by the stinging nettle?

It would take an entire day to get over the sting. (I was a whimp as a kid) Ask my mother. When I was 7 in the hottest Michigan months I used to wear swamp boots, for fear of contracting lime disease. LOL – Don’t tell anyone. I’m not as super-hero’esq as I appear.

Drinking them in tinctures and/or herbal infusions are quite different from juicing them. Just make sure you really know what you are juicing… I don’t want to have to have the FitLife juicing squad heli-drop from the sky to kick your booty. Just make ‘sure’ you know what greens to be juicing. This is why we say, purchase them from stores, instead of randomly picking them up in the open fields, parks or forests. Besides, who knows what kinds of pesticides people are using on their lawns now. You could wake up with a third eye. (Not the kind that you want, and no you can’t shoot lasers out of it.)

Miraculously these three different greens pack a powerful punch when they are juiced. And no, the stinging Nettles do not get into rip your throat open when you are juicing them! And no, the yellow flowers that accompany them are not suggested for juicing.

How do you find Comfrey, Stinging Nettles and Dandelion Greens To Use For Juicing?

Most all Farmer’s Markets carry them, and Co-ops have them in the summertime. High five your produce grocer or local farmer and ask her where you can find them to make some amazing juicing recipes? Then do what I do… and talk them into juicing, their family into juicing and all of their neighborhood into juicing.

Local Farmers Market

What’s the best way to select them?

Dandelion Greens are best picked when they are young. The older the leaves, the more bitter they will taste.

Suppose your doctor tells you, on your next visit, that he has just discovered a miracle drug which, when eaten as a part of your daily diet or taken as a beverage, could, depending on the peculiarities of your body chemistry: prevent or cure liver diseases, such as hepatitis or jaundice; act as a tonic and gentle diuretic to purify your blood, cleanse your system, dissolve kidney stones, and otherwise improve gastro-intestinal health; assist in weight reduction; cleanse your skin and eliminate acne; improve your bowel function, working equally well to relieve both constipation and diarrhea; prevent or lower high blood pressure; prevent or cure anemia; lower your serum cholesterol by as much as half; eliminate or drastically reduce acid indigestion and gas buildup by cutting the heaviness of fatty foods; prevent or cure various forms of cancer; prevent or control diabetes mellitus; and, at the same time, have no negative side effects and selectively act on only what ails you. If he gave you a prescription for this miracle medicine, would you use it religiously at first to solve whatever the problem is and then consistently for preventative body maintenance?

All the above curative functions, and more, have been attributed to one plant known to everyone, Taraxacum officinale, which means the “Official Remedy for Disorders.” We call it the common dandelion. – Peter Gail -

The genus name for comfrey is Symphytum, which means to “unite or knit together.” The name com-firma means, simply, “knitting of bones.”

Comfrey contains a special substance called allantoin, which is a cell proliferative. In other words, it makes cells grow faster. This is one of the reasons why comfrey-treated bones knit so fast, wounds mend so quickly, and burns heal with such little scarring.

Comfrey leaves follow the Dandelion Greens as far as picking goes. But if you don’t have them growing in your neighborhood (we don’t really suggest doing this because people use pesticides on their lawn and also pesticides for spiders) so we suggest buying them from the Health Food Stores, Co-ops and other Farmer’s Markets.

Stinging Nettles ~ follow the same course. The larger they are, they more bitter they are. Buy them (wrapped) so that your hands do not touch the leaves. For over 2,000 years, doctors have recognized the herb’s ability to stop all kinds of internal and external bleeding, and considered it a good blood purifier. Juicing it has been found to help cure mucus congestion, skin irritations, water retention, and diarrhea. The beverage is also said to help nursing mothers produce milk . . . and stimulate the digestive glands of the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder.

Here are some fantastic juicing combinations and I have been juicing for the past six or seven years:

(Just as an FYI….when you use these greens in the juicing recipes they are very potent, and we suggest you start slowly, and don’t drink more than 8 ounces at a time) because you may incur a bit of diarrhea, intestinal cramping or nausea. This juicing recipe will give you 8 ounces, whereas juicing this tonic once a day for ten days without having any kind of negative reaction. If you want to amp it up a bit, then double the juicing recipe for one person, 16 ounces.

Artificial sweeteners especially aspartame has gotten a bad rap over the years, most likely due to studies showing they cause cancer. But not to worry Ajinomoto the company that makes

Aspartame has changed the name to AminoSweet. It has the same toxic ingredients but a nice new sounding name. And if you or your child happens to be allergic to Aspartame, well don’t take it personally it’s just business.

Despite the evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market . In continues to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things.

Most consumers are oblivious to the fact that Aspartame was invented as a drug but upon discovery of its’ sweet taste was magically transformed from a drug to a food additive. HFA wants to warn our readers to beware of a wolf dressed up in sheep’s clothing or in this case Aspartame dressed up as Aminosweet.

Over 25 years ago, aspartame was first introduced into the European food supply. Today, it is an everyday component of most diet beverages, sugar-free desserts, and chewing gums in countries worldwide. But the tides have been turning as the general public is waking up to the truth about artificial sweeteners like aspartame and the harm they cause to health. The latest aspartame marketing scheme is a desperate effort to indoctrinate the public into accepting the chemical sweetener as natural and safe, despite evidence to the contrary.
http://worldtruth.tv/aspartame-has-been-renamed-and-is-now-being-marketed-as-a-natural-sweetener/
Meet the Corporate Front Groups Fighting to Make Sure You Can't Know What's in Your Foodtag:www.project.nsearch.com,2012-06-03:4878805:BlogPost:5127052012-06-03T00:07:40.000Zfrank blackingtonhttp://www.project.nsearch.com/profile/frankblackington

What do a former mouthpiece for tobacco and big oil, a corporate-interest PR flack, and the regional director of a Monsanto-funded tort reform group have in common?

They’re all part of the anti-labeling PR team that will soon unleash a massive advertising and PR campaign in California, designed to scare voters into rejecting the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.

In November, California voters will vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on a law to require mandatory labeling of all GMO ingredients in processed foods, and ban the routine industry practice of mislabeling foods containing GMO ingredients as ‘natural.’

Polls show that nearly 90% of the state’s voters plan to vote ‘yes.’ But when November rolls around, will voter support still be strong? Not if the biotech, agribusiness, and food manufacturers industries can help it.

It’s estimated that the opposition will spend $60 million - $100 million to convince voters that GMOs are perfectly safe. They’ll try to scare voters into believing that labeling will make food more expensive, that it will spark hundreds of lawsuits against small farmers and small businesses, and that it will contribute to world hunger. None of this is true. On the contrary, studies suggest just the opposite.

Here’s what is true: The opposition has lined up some heavy-hitters and industry-funded front groups -- masquerading as “grassroots” organizations -- to help spin their anti-labeling propaganda machine.

You have the right to know what’s in your food. You also have the right to know who is working tirelessly to prevent you from ever having that right – and who is signing their paychecks. Here’s a partial lineup of hired guns and organizations behind the anti-labeling advertising blitz soon to hit the California airwaves:

Tom Hiltachk: Monsanto’s Man in California

Tom Hiltachk is the PR gunslinger behind the Coalition Against the Costly Food Labeling Proposition (CACFLP), an anti-labeling front group. A partner at the Sacramento-based lobbying firm Bell, McAndrews & Hiltachk, Hiltachk is no stranger to front groups. With a little help from his friends at Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds, he helped organize the Californians for Smokers’ Rights group to fight anti-smoking initiatives in the 1980s and 1990s. He also helped form the Californians for Fair Business Policy – a so-called “grassroots” organization, but actually a front group to mobilize business opposition to anti-smoking initiatives. That organization was funded by an “academic” front group – the Claremont Institute – which was in turn funded by tobacco companies.

Hitachk also has ties to Big Oil, including a colorful history with California’s Proposition 23, a conservative-backed ballot initiative launched – and defeated – in 2010. The initiative, supported by Big Oil, would have repealed California’s clean energy and climate laws. Hiltachk was initially an ally of Ted Costa, a veteran right-wing activist behind many conservative initiatives, including Prop 23, and head of the group People’s Advocate. But that relationship soured, according to ThinkProgress.org, when Costa realized that Hiltachk’s main motivation was to funnel the $50 million that he hoped would be raised from oil companies and the Chamber of Commerce to himself and his friends.

Coalition Against Costly Food Labeling Proposition: Looking out for consumers’ financial well being?

The Coalition Against Costly Food Labeling Proposition (CACFLP) runs a website called stopcostlyfoodlabeling.com, giving the impression that this is a group concerned about protecting consumers’ wallets. But the website lists only one consumer group in its coalition – Consumers Coalition of California. A search of the IRS.gov site turns up nothing on this group.
By Dr. Mercola

It's no secret that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. But how many people realize that fluoride—which is still added to many municipal water supplies in the U.S.—is linked to heart disease?

In a new study published in the journal Nuclear Medicine Communicationsi, researchers found that fluoride may be associated with an increased cardiovascular risk as it causes hardening of your arteries.

Reviewing the imaging data and cardiovascular history of patients who received whole-body sodium fluoride PET scans, the researchers found a significant correlation between a history of cardiovascular events and presence of fluoride uptake in coronary arteries.

While there are certainly many factors contributing to the rise in heart disease—poor diet likely being the most important—it certainly doesn't help to add a chemical to water supplies that will be consumed by everyone in the area regardless of health status, from toddlers to seniors, that might contribute to the problem.

The primary issue here is that there's a lack of evidence supporting the use of fluoride, and an awful lot of evidence stacked against the indiscriminate use of it, including these latest findings.

The practice of adding fluoride to tap water began in 1945. With more than 70 percent of U.S. public water supplies currently fluoridated, chances are you're one of the 170 million Americans who drink and bathe in fluoride on a daily basis.ii

Most likely, your dentist—along with countless government and public health officials—has praised and promoted the use of fluoride, both in toothpaste and drinking water, as one of your must-do regimens to promote strong and healthy teeth.

But let's make this point clear right from the start: fluoride is not an essential nutrient needed for your health—dental or otherwise. There is not one single process in your body that requires fluoride.

Fluoride is a Cumulative Poison

It's important to realize that fluoride is a cumulative poison. Approximately 98 percent of the fluoride you ingest in water is absorbed into your blood through your gastrointestinal tract. From there, it enters your body's cellular tissues. On average, about 50 percent of the fluoride you ingest each day gets excreted through your kidneys.

Whether this happens or not is highly dependent on the presence of calcium, magnesium, Vitamin C, and selenium in your bloodstream, to which the fluoride will bind so that it no longer is seeking calcium-rich tissues that make up so much of your body. The remainder accumulates in your teeth and bones, iii pineal gland,iv and other tissues, including your blood vessels.

According to the featured study:

"Fluoride uptake in vascular walls was demonstrated in 361 sites of 54 (96%) patients, whereas calcification was observed in 317 sites of 49 (88%) patients. Significant correlation between fluoride uptake and calcification was observed in most of the arterial walls, except in those of the abdominal aorta. Fluoride uptake in coronary arteries was demonstrated in 28 (46%) patients and coronary calcifications were observed in 34 (56%) patients."

The amount deposited into your bones and teeth varies depending on your age. In children, more than 50 percent of an ingested dose of fluoride is deposited in bone, but in adults only about 10 percent is stored there. As the number of research studies into the toxic effects of fluoride has increased, there is now support for a rather long list of potential health problems related to fluoride accumulation in your body.

Here's a list of 20 of the most commonly mentioned health hazards and diseases associated with fluoride exposure:v,vi
Lowers IQ Hyperactivity and/or lethargyviii Increases lead absorptionix Disrupts synthesis of collagen
Brain damage Dementia Muscle disorders Arthritis
Bone fracturesvii Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) Dental fluorosis (staining and pitting of teeth) Lowers thyroid function
Disrupts immune system Inhibits formation of antibodies Genetic damage and cell deathx Inactivates 62 enzymesxii
Increases tumor and cancer rate Increases aging process Reduces melatonin production and leads to earlier onset of pubertyxi Damages sperm, increases infertility

Fluoride—the Toxic Drug in Your Water Supply

Prior to 1945 when communal water fluoridation took effect, fluoride was a known toxin. For example, a 1936 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association stated that fluoride at the 1 ppm (part per million) concentration is as toxic as arsenic and lead. The Journal of the American Medical Association stated in their September 18, 1943 issue, that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons that change the permeability of the cell membrane by certain enzymes.xiii And, an editorial published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, October 1, 1944, stated:

"Drinking water containing as little as 1.2 ppm fluoride will cause developmental disturbances. We cannot run the risk of producing such serious systemic disturbances. The potentialities for harm outweigh those for good."

How community water fluoridation ended up being so widely implemented, and eventually even became heralded as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century, is explained in-depth in Christopher Bryson's book The Fluoride Deception.xiv In it, he describes the intertwined interests that existed in the 1940's and 50's between the aluminum industry, the U.S. nuclear weapons program, and the dental industry, which resulted in fluoride being declared not only safe, but beneficial to human health. Once you understand the historical context, it becomes easier to grasp why anyone would ever promote water fluoridation as "a good idea."

Due to the massive amounts of fluoride required to produce bomb-grade uranium and plutonium for nuclear weapons, the Manhattan Project conducted various experiments to determine its toxic effects in 1946.

There were already several instances on record of fluoride being toxic to crops, livestock and people living downwind from the polluters, so the public concern over fluoride emissions needed to be quelled in order to avoid potentially crippling lawsuits.

Within the now declassified files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission, Christopher Bryson found that the toxicology department at the University of Rochester, under the direction of Harold Hodge, was asked to produce medical information about fluoride that could help defend the government against lawsuits where they were charged with fluoride pollution. Back in 1957, Harold Hodge was the nation's leading, most trusted scientist, and when he declared that fluoride was "absolutely safe" at 1 ppm, everyone believed him.

So, the endorsement of fluoride as a nutrient that will grace you with brilliant pearly whites, rather than the poison it really is, was born from the need to address increasingly debilitating political and industrial problems relating to fluoride pollution. The rest, as they say, is history.

What's Really Added to Your Water Supply?

It's important to understand that the "fluoride" added to your drinking water is NOT the natural mineral, nor a pharmaceutical grade fluoride. Instead, the product most commonly used is another chemical fluoride compound—a toxic waste product from phosphate fertilizer plants.

There are three basic compounds that can be used for fluoridating water supplies:xv

Sodium fluoride (NaF)
Sodium silicofluoride
Hydrofluorosilicic acid

The first one of these, sodium fluoride, was the first of the fluoride waste materials to be used for fluoridation, but now is rarely used. It's the most well known, as this is the compound used as pharmaceutical grade in toxicology studies and other research into the potential health dangers of fluoride. The other two, sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluorosilicic acid, are the compounds actually used for water fluoridation, with hydrofluorosilicic acid being the most commonly used additive, according to the CDC.xvi Sodium silicofluoride and hydrofluorosilicic acid are the waste products from the wet scrubbering systems of the fertilizer industry, and are classified as hazardous wastes. Contamination with various impurities such as arsenic is also common in these products.

Hydrofluorosilicic acid is one of the most reactive chemicals known to man. Its toxicity is well known in chemical circles. It will eat through metal and plastic pipes, and corrode stainless steel and other materials. It will dissolve rubber tires and melt concretexvii. This is what is added to your water—all in the name of saving children from cavities! But even the less reactive sodium fluoride is a deadly poison, even in small quantities, and in the form used for fluoridation also contains additional impurities. Other common uses for sodium fluoride include:

Rat and cockroach poisons
Anesthetics
Hypnotics and psychiatric drugs

The Way Forward: Shifting the Burden of Proof

Still despite all the evidence, getting fluoride out of American water supplies has been exceedingly difficult. And it's no wonder, really, when you factor in the considerable liability the U.S. government could face were they to suddenly admit that water fluoridation was a way to hide toxic pollution, and there are detrimental health effects associated with drinking these pollutants...

Fortunately, there is a way forward.

According to Jeff Green, National Director of Citizens for Safe Drinking Water, a repeated theme in some of the recent cases where communities successfully removed fluoride from their water supply is the shifting of the burden of proof. Rather than citizens taking on the burden of proving that fluoride is harmful and shouldn't be added, a more successful strategy has been to hold those making claims and the elected officials who rely on them, accountable for delivering proof that the specific fluoridation chemical being used fulfills their health and safety claims, and is in compliance with all regulations, laws, and risk assessments already required for safe drinking water.

For example, a couple of years ago, a Tennessee town stopped adding the hydrofluosilicic acid fluoride product they had been using, while still keeping its resolution to fluoridate its water supplies intact (meaning they didn't make a decision on whether it might be harmful). They just haven't been able to find a replacement product that is compliant with existing laws, regulations and safe-water requirements, and they will not add any fluoride product that is not in compliance. To learn more, please see this previous article, which discusses these strategies more in-depth.

Join the Fight to Get Fluoride Out of Drinking Water

In summary it would seem like most rational people would conclude you should avoid using fluoride for its "preventive" benefits. You can easily choose not to take fluoride supplements or buy fluoride-free toothpaste and mouthwash. You can also dramatically reduce your fluoride exposure by opting for organic foods, on which fluoride-based pesticides are not permitted to be used. However, you're still going to be stuck with whatever your community puts in the water, and as discussed, it's very difficult to filter out of your water once it's added. Many do not have the resources or the knowledge to do so.

It's really time to stop the archaic practice of water fluoridation.

Earlier this year I joined forces with Dr. Paul Connett to help put an END to water fluoridation in the U.S and Canada. The Fluoride Action Network has a game plan to do just that. Our fluoride initiative will primarily focus on Canada since 60 percent of Canada is already non-fluoridated. If we can get Calgary and the rest of Canada to stop fluoridating their water, we believe the U.S. will be forced to follow. I urge you to join the anti-fluoride movement in Canada and the United States by contacting the representative for your area below.

With the way that things are heading in this country, it is not surprising that there are approximately 3 million preppers in the United States today. What is surprising is that there are not more people prepping. The economy is rapidly falling to pieces, the national debt is absolutely soaring, the earth is becoming increasingly unstable, a major war could erupt in the Middle East at any time and the fabric of our society is coming apart right in front of our eyes. We have become incredibly dependent on technology and we have become incredibly dependent on our economic system. If a major natural disaster, a killer pandemic, an EMP attack or the imposition of martial law caused a significant transportation disruption, America would literally change overnight. We live during a time of tremendous global instability, and yet most people still see no need to start prepping at all. Most people just continue to have blind faith in our leaders and in our system. But what happens if our leaders fail us? What happens if our system collapses? What are they going to do then?

The number of preppers in the United States today is steadily increasing, but the vast majority of people out there still see no reason to start getting ready for "the end of the world as we know it". Most people just assume that things will always somehow get better or that they will somehow be immune to whatever calamities are heading our way. Most people always seem to have a "good excuse" for why they do not need to prepare.

Natural Health News — An Italian court has ruled there is a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

In what may be a ground-breaking decision, the Italian Court of Rimini has ruled that causation between an MMR vaccine and the resulting autism in a young child “has been established.”

The unnamed child received the vaccine in March of 2004 and on returning home immediately developed adverse symptoms. During the next year the child regressed, receiving the autism diagnosis one year later and is now 100% disabled by the disease.

The Italian court ruled that the child “has been damaged by irreversible complications due to vaccination (prophylaxis trivalent MMR)” and ordered the Ministry of Health to compensate the child with a 15 year annuity and to reimburse the parents of their court cost.

The judgement can be found in full here and the original news report in Italian appears here. A rough Google translation appears here.

The case is expected to go to appeal as authorities are concerned it may set a legal precedent.

Not the first judgement against the vaccine

This, however, is the second recent judgement to come to this conclusion. Earlier this year a US court also ruled that the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine can cause autism.

In a ruling that kept very quiet in the press, the US Court of Federal Claims has conceded that the mercury-based preservative thimerosal, which was in vaccines until 2002, caused autism in the case of one child.

The ruling was just one of 4,900 cases currently being considered for compensation payments. Health officials are concerned that it could open the floodgates for even more claims.

The ruling, made by US Assistant Attorney General Peter Keisler, was made last November, and was one of three test cases into the MMR-autism link that was being considered by a three-member panel, which Keisler chaired.

The case involved a child who received nine vaccinations in July 2000, when she was 18 months old. Two of these contained thimerosal. Within days, the girl, who had previously been healthy, began to exhibit loss of language skills, no eye contact, loss of response to verbal direction, insomnia, incessant screaming, and arching.

A diagnosis of autism was confirmed seven months later.

In its defence, the US government claimed the girl had a pre-existing mitochondrial disorder that was aggravated by the vaccine. However in his conclusion, Keisler said that “compensation is appropriate”.

Too much heat, not enough light

Both findings would appear to support the controversial findings of Dr Andrew Wakefield who, in 1998 published an article in the Lancet suggesting a link between the vaccine and autism. Official reaction to the paper was of such force and such outrage that the Lancet withdrew the paper on the grounds that it was scientifically unsound.

Wakefield has been in a battle for his professional reputation ever since and the question of the proposed link between the MMR vaccine and autism has been largely sidelined (though not solved) by bitter and very public professional rows that have done little to bring clarity to concerned parents.

(NaturalNews) No one knows who discovered the benefits of composting by planting seeds in the refuse of human, animal, mineral and vegetable waste materials. Regardless of its origin, it's clear that life grows from death. Drawing new life from the leavings of the past has been happening on earth since the beginning, and mankind can make use of this divine gift by turning raw materials into nutrient-rich compost for organic sustainability.

Modern composting
Organic gardening principles developed with earth herself; and it's only a matter of artistry, trial and error that man has discovered how to intensify the conditions that supply the benefits of composting. The bottom line is that the best compost is little more than rotting organic matter.

Successful composting requires a basic knowledge of the process that operates in a compost heap; and, the realization that no matter what you do or how many small mistakes you make, you're still going to have reasonably decent compost.

Rather than getting bogged down in numerous complex formulas and techniques, start simply and follow basic guidelines for making good compost. You can complicate it later.

The benefits of composting
Compost adds nutrients and micronutrients to the soil and boosts plant growth and yields. Nutrients are released at a rate related to the plant's needs, depending on the temperature and available moisture.

Compost binds with soil improving its texture and structure. Healthy soil organically sustains your plants, providing better moisture, oxygen for root growth and improved drainage. It increases the soil's capacity to hold 200 percent of its dry weight in water.

Composting attracts nature's soil builders in the form of earthworms and friendly insects that rejuvenate the soil and increase plant growth. It also helps balance the pH in the soil and acts like a buffer making plants more resilient and less dependent on specific pH levels.

Organic composting materials
A basic guide to achieve composing benefits is to build your compost from two parts vegetable matter and one part animal matter -- manure. Materials included must be biodegradable and contain nutrients that are available and usable to microorganisms. Examples of organic vegetable matter include pond algae, wood ashes, coffee grinds, feathers, organic kitchen garbage -- except grease, oil and animal fats --, dry dog food -- which activates nitrogen --, eggshells, flowers, grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and kelp. There are many more.

Activating organic compost
By adding an activator, you speed up the process to obtain composting benefits by providing a nitrogen-protein source and enzymes to feed the microcommunity. Organic activators include finished compost, compost tea, and well-rotted, dried manure. For vegetarians who prefer not using animal manure, protein meal can be used as an activator.

Additional factors in making a decision before deriving the benefits of composting are locating your compost pile, maintaining its appearance and size, proper drainage, aeration, and insulation for those in colder climates.

Speeding decomposition
Breaking down the raw materials into nutrient-rich organic matter is the goal and speeding decomposition is usually necessary to gain optimal composting benefits. Adding moisture as you build the pile, wetting it down periodically and aerating with frequent turning of the materials in the compost pile increase microbial action for breaking down materials at an accelerated rate.
Getting started
Getting started is the most important thing in establishing organic sustainability by utilizing the benefits of composting for organic gardens. Plant some seeds; start your compost pile and learn as you go. Borrow what you need from the earth and give back what you have in abundance to stay in the natural flow.

(NaturalNews) The real rationale for the creation of fire safe cigarettes wasn't so much for consumer protection, but was meant more for the manufacturers' defense against lawsuits if and when a smoker accidentally burns their house down. Prior to the introduction of the fire safe cigarette (FSC), commercially rolled cigarettes (unlike cigars) would burn all the way down to the filter if left unattended. Despite claims that they are safer, however, a fire safe cigarette still burns for over a minute between safety rings, also known as "speed bumps," and so the number of fires caused by unguarded lit cigarettes has barely been reduced. That's the bad news.

Unfortunately, there is no good news. The other bad news is that the "safety rings" are made of an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion based adhesive (carpet glue), which causes severe irritation of mucous membranes and the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms of this damage include a severe burning sensation, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headaches, nausea and vomiting. In other words, the speed bumps aren't only useless, they are compounding problems for smokers.

Of course, there currently are no regulations (and probably never will be) on ingredients in cigarettes, including ammonia and carpet glue. After all, who really cares if the "safety rings" are made with toxic glue, since everyone is already aware that there are 4,000 chemicals legally mixed into every cancer stick? In other words, what does it matter if cigarette manufacturers mix in a few more lethal chemicals, right? That just makes the grand total 4,010.

FSC really stands for Fail-Safe Corporations
In the 1990's, the state of Minnesota and Blue Cross and Blue Shield won 6.5 billion dollars in settlements from Big Tobacco, when an insider blew the whistle on Marlboro and Kool for using ammonia to freebase nicotine, making the vapors stronger and more addicting. Adding carpet glue to the mix is just pouring salt in the wound.

Many smokers know the risks involved in falling asleep with a lit cigarette, but cigarette manufacturers and corporations needed some added insurance against lawsuits, so they created the fire safe cigarette. But statistics reveal that FSC's are barely reducing home fires caused by unattended cigarettes. In fact, a retired firefighter and Battalion Chief said 1 in every 3 house fires is still ignited by a cigarette.

When a cigarette falls in between couch cushions, or between bed sheets, it doesn't really matter if the cigarette goes out a minute later. Thanks to the pesticides, ammonia, bleached paper, and now carpet glue, the lit "cherry" of a cigarette burns at up to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit, so when left resting on cotton or polyester, it can smolder for hours before actually igniting into a flame. Then it can devour an entire house within minutes.

"Fire safe" cigarettes are made with 3 layers of paper which requires triple the glues of past cigarettes. Designed to reduce oxygen flow, the glue often puts the cigarette out too early, causing the smoker to re-ignite several times throughout a cigarette. This is quite ironic, because it essentially adds to the heat and the toxic release, which a typical cigarette filter can't handle. In turn, it's forcing the smoker to puff harder and more frequently than they otherwise would, compounding health problems.

Smokers of the FSC's complain of migraine headaches, nausea, burning eyes and a copper metallic taste in their mouth. In addition, the carpet glue exhale, combined with carbon monoxide, can cause neurological problems for infants. Naphthalene, a core part of the "safe" cigarette, is an insecticide and a bi-product of the coal tar industry and is commonly found in moth balls. Exposure in high amounts can cause irreversible damage to the eyes and the liver, and can result in malaise, confusion, anemia, convulsions, and coma, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

You can identify FSC's by the letters near the barcode on the pack or by holding the cigarettes up to the light, which makes the two bands visible. New York was the first state to require the fire safe rings, but now nearly every state in the U.S. has jumped on the bandwagon.

How can a smoker escape the insanity?
How do you escape the madness? Roll your own cigarettes, preferably with organic tobacco (non-GMO/no pesiticides) and rice or hemp paper, which is not bleached and doesn't have carpet glue in it. Or better yet, maybe FSC's are your blessing in disguise, and will encourage you to check out a smoking cessation program with proven results, such as 14AndOut. Recommended by the Health Ranger himself, (http://premium.naturalnews.tv/14AndOut__TV.htm) 14AndOut teaches smokers how to wean themselves off smoking in 14 days or less, and addresses chemical addiction, behavior modification and nutrition so you never return to cigarettes, nicotine, or carpet glue!

(NaturalNews) If you are one of the millions of Americans that struggles daily with lack of energy or chronic fatigue, then you are likely very familiar with those constant feelings of being tired and drained. But rather than turn to coffee, so-called energy drinks, or harsh stimulants for a quick pick-me-up, you might instead try supplementing with one or more of these amazing, energy-boosting "super" herbs.

Korean ginseng, also known as Panax ginseng
Stimulants like caffeine that tend to give the body a "kick" of energy also tend to put heavy strain on the body's adrenal cortex, which regulates stress, by causing it to work harder than normal to produce more energy. But adaptogens like Korean ginseng (Panax schinsen) actually feed the adrenal cortex the nutrients it needs to produce lasting, stress-resistant energy the way the body was meant to produce it.

Adaptogens essentially increase the body's natural resistance to stress, which can subsequently improve energy levels by taking a large burden off the adrenal system. And this is exactly what Korean ginseng, and also other forms of ginseng, to a lesser extent, can do for you when supplemented on a regular basis. Dr. C. Leigh Broadhurst, Ph.D., from The Herb Companion recommends taking 100 milligrams (mg) of the standardized extract in capsule or liquid form four times daily (http://www.herbcompanion.com/health/Herbs-for-energy.aspx?page=2).

Eleuthero root, also known as Siberian ginseng
Though not technically a true member of the ginseng family, eleuthero root (Eleutherococcus senticosus, Acanthopanax senticosus) is also a powerful adaptogenic herb with multiple health-promoting characteristics (http://www.tasteforlife.com).

Besides containing powerful analgesic (painkilling), anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, aphrodisiac, and immune-boosting compounds, eleuthero root and root bark is similar to Korean (Panax) ginseng in that it helps regulate key hormones in the body related to stress, endurance, and overall energy levels. When taken steadily over a period of time, eleuthero root can help lessen fatigue and stimulate the adrenal cortex to produce more cortisol, the key stress hormone in the body that is responsible for producing "get up and go" feelings after a normal night's sleep.

Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), one of the most vital herbs in Ayurvedic healing, is another adaptogenic herb that actually works quite well when taken together with ginseng of eleuthero root. According to The Herb Companion, taking one to two teaspoons twice or three times daily of this shrub extract -- or one 500 mg capsule of ashwagandha three times daily -- is plenty to obtain its energy-boosting power.

The Chopra Center adds that ashwagandha can also help boost immunity; improve memory and learning capacity; reduce anxiety and depression without causing fatigue; stabilize blood sugar; lower bad cholesterol levels; protect the brain against degeneration; fight malaria; and reduce or eliminate inflammation. This group recommends taking between 600 and 1000 mg of ashwagandha twice daily (http://www.chopra.com/ashwagandha).

Yerba mate
A powerful herbal tea with 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, and 11 polyphenols and antioxidants, yerba mate, an amazing rainforest plant, is an excellent alternative to coffee for boosting energy levels naturally. Yerba mate contains low levels of caffeine, but because this is balanced out with a host of other nutrients, brewed yerba mate tea will not give you the "jitters," and will not harm your adrenal glands.

Yerba mate tea also helps stimulate the immune system; reduce bad cholesterol levels; improve mental clarity; relieve allergies; and fight bad breath. Here are some helpful instructions for how to prepare yerba mate tea at home (http://yerbamatedrinker.com/how_to_prepare_the_mate.html).

Other energy-boosting herbs that you may wish to investigate further include licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), schisandra (Schizandra chinensis), raw cacao, and goji berries (Lycium barbarum).

(NaturalNews) Getting diagnosed with type-2 diabetes can do a lot of things to your perspective: Your life, your priorities, your family and even your food. "What am I supposed to eat now?" is a common question after the initial prognosis. Fortunately, enjoying food may still be possible. Diabetes educator, Kathy Honick, of the Barnes Jewish Hospital at St. Louis suggest that patients newly diagnosed with diabetes ask a dietitian to learn what foods may now be available for them and what to avoid.

Type-2 diabetics: Why you want to watch your diet
A diet of sugary drinks and highly processed food is an abnormal dietary intake that causes the increasing and prolonging of blood glucose after eating. This condition forces the pancreas to produce more insulin, the key factor responsible for the diabetes affecting more or less 25.8 million Americans of all ages.

For the type-2 diabetic, the body no longer has enough insulin to keep blood glucose level normal. The body acquires an insulin resistance, thus preventing it from being able to use blood glucose for energy. When this occurs, sugar levels in the body shoot up causing hyperglycemia. Common symptoms include frequent urination, fatigue and hunger. This condition builds up over time and normally affects people who are overweight, although it has been also known to happen to people who are thin. It is also commonly found in the elderly.

An unmanaged diabetes condition can cause serious complications such as kidney problems, nerve damage, high blood pressure and heart attack. The skin can develop sores and infections especially at the feet, sometimes times leading to amputation.

The Glycemic Index
Blood glucose levels are affected by the kind food taken. Food having the greatest effect is carbohydrates because they are processed into glucose from the intestine and into the blood. All carbohydrates, however, are not equally created. Some can be digested at different levels and produce varying effects in raising the glucose level after a meal.

This effect has been quantified by the Glycemic Index. According to the University of Sydney website, food with high GI are those rapidly digested and absorbed resulting to a marked fluctuation in blood sugar levels. The foods with low GI, on the other hand, are slowly digested and absorbed, producing a slow and gradual rise in blood sugar and insulin levels. Studies have shown that a low GI diet improves both glucose and lipid profiles in people with diabetes since the diet also reduces insulin levels and insulin resistance. It also has the added benefit of weight control since it helps control appetite and delays hunger.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1999 recommended to people of industrialized countries to base their diets on low GI food to prevent the diseases of affluence like diabetes, obesity and coronary disease.

Best foods for type-2 diabetics
People diagnosed with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association, should take steps to control their blood sugar. However, this does not mean that their diet is vastly different from the general population. The main emphasis is losing weight and eating right. Below are some foods that can help in weight management and the prevention dangerous spikes in blood glucose:

1. Choose complex carbohydrates over simple carbohydrates - Keeping sugar levels stable is a top priority for diabetics. That is why complex carbohydrates are a better source of energy compared to simple carbohydrates that produce spikes in the bloodstream and cause serious problems. Try to avoid sweet drinks, cakes, candies or at the very least try to take them in very small quantities. Instead, choose complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, brown rice, beans, oats, quinoa and whole wheat pasta as they are slowly digested and absorbed into the blood, thus producing a gradual and consistent sugar level instead of unpredictable spikes.

2. Increase the amount of fiber you eat - Fiber is a type of carbohydrate; however, it is not broken down by the body and does not contribute any calories. Fiber has two kinds: soluble and insoluble. Insoluble fiber keeps the digestive tract working (i.e. whole wheat bran) while soluble fiber can lower cholesterol. The New England Journal of Medicine featured a study where diabetics more or less consumed 50 grams of soluble fiber daily. The study indicated that those who had more fiber were able to control their blood glucose much better than those who didn't. An example of this type of fiber is oatmeal. Moreover, fiber adds bulk to what you eat, helping you manage your appetite and keeps those calories in check. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of this nutrient.

3. Don't forget your proteins - proteins play a role in weight control. A study conducted in Sweden revealed that increasing protein intake can reduce weight faster than limiting carbohydrate consumption, moreover, protein rich meals tend to make people more alert than sugar or carbohydrate rich meals.

4. Use herbs and spices to flavor you dishes - Using natural products instead of food additives to flavor food is a great way to increase the medicinal value of your diet. The Journal of Nutrition and Food Science featured a study where it was revealed that the phytochemicals in common household spices can actually improve insulin activity, presenting a more natural way in treating and preventing type-2 diabetes. Examples of these common household spices are cinnamon, garlic, basil and oregano. These spices have also been found to lower blood pressure, increase platelet aggregation and protect blood vessels, greatly reducing cardiovascular disease associated with type-2 diabetes.

There is no predetermined standard diet for diabetes. The methods of controlling blood sugar are different for each person. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are main concerns for patients receiving insulin and clearly there are a lot of factors to consider. Having a thorough understanding of your specific diabetes condition in consultation with your Naturopathic Doctor can go a long way in managing the onset of the symptoms of diabetes.

(NaturalNews) The day is coming when the host of antibiotics doctors currently use to fight off bacterial infections won't work anymore, leaving the world's population vulnerable to everything from scratches on your knee to disease, according to the United Nation's (UN) World Health Organization (WHO).

That's because bacteria are becoming so resistant to common antibiotics that the phenomenon will bring about the "end of modern medicine as we know it," warns Margaret Chan, the director-general of WHO.

What that will mean for mankind, she says, is that - if current trends persist - today's antibiotics will essentially become useless, and so much so that even routine operations won't be possible. A cut could be fatal.

More than that, however, breakthrough drugs to treat long-standing diseases like tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS would suddenly become ineffective.

Speaking to a conference of infectious disease experts in Copenhagen, Denmark, recently, Chan said it's possible the world could be moving towards a "post-antibiotic era."

"Things as common as strep throat or a child's scratched knee could once again kill," she said. "Antimicrobial resistance is on the rise in Europe and elsewhere in the world. We are losing our first-line antimicrobials."

An 'evolving threat'
She said replacement medications for antibiotics would most likely take longer to heal and, naturally, would be more expensive.

"Replacement treatments are more costly, more toxic, need much longer durations of treatment, and may require treatment in intensive care units," Chan noted.

"For patients infected with some drug-resistant pathogens, mortality has been shown to increase by around 50 per cent. A post-antibiotic era means, in effect, an end to modern medicine as we know it."

Chan's statement comes on the heels of a book published by the WHO detailing the potential crisis called The Evolving Threat of Antimicrobial Resistance which provides details on the coming "global crisis."

"Bacteria which cause disease react to the antibiotics used as treatment by becoming resistant to them, sooner or later," says an excerpt from the book. "A crisis has been building up over the decades, so that today many common and life-threatening infections are becoming difficult or even impossible to treat, sometimes turning a common infection into a life-threatening one."

No boundaries
The biggest problem, WHO notes, is that antibiotics have been over-prescribed and used too long for years, and the result has been that bacteria are adapting to resist them.

The book says an "inexorable increase in antimicrobial-resistant infections, a dearth of new antibiotics in the pipeline and little incentive for industry to invest in research and development had led to a need for innovation."

The development and widespread prescribing of antibiotics in the early 1930s was a boon to modern medicine. Before they were invented, simple cuts and scrapes that became infected often led to serious illness and death. Since then, however - and especially within the past decade - doctors have regularly over-prescribed them, and often for the wrong reasons, say researchers. That has led to the current crisis.

The phenomenon has led to the development, over time, of so-called "super bugs" - bacteria that cannot be beat down, even with the most powerful antibiotics.

"It is a worldwide issue - there are no boundaries," said Prof. Peter Hawkey, a clinical microbiologist and chair of the British government's antibiotic-resistance working group. "We have very good policies on the use of antibiotics in man and in animals in the UK. But we are not alone. We have to think globally."

While the threat of known bacteria becoming resistant to current antibiotics, there is also a threat from bacteria that was previously unknown.

Just last month, scientists found "ancient" bacteria in the Lechuguilla Cave in Carlsbad Cavern National Park in New Mexico, which has been cut off from any input from the surface for four million to seven million years.

How to fix the problem?

Dr. John Turnidge, Chairman of the Australian Expert Committee which examined animal and human antimicrobial resistance, says human antibiotic usage can be halved, drug companies can stop trying to refine antibiotics used for animals to make them suitable for humans, and human and animal drug use can be kept separate.

Other experts say more aggressive development of new antibiotics is also necessary.

But the bottom line appears to be this: The medical system needs to stop over-prescribing these drugs, lest they force bacteria - which has survived on earth for millions of years - to continue to mutate in ways that become resistant to our ability to kill them.

(NaturalNews) The use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has been long associated with fatty liver disease, diabetes and increases in obesity, but a new study has investigated its effects on the brain. HFCS is an inexpensive ingredient added to fast food and fizzy drinks and is 6 times sweeter than sugar obtained from sugar cane.

The study by UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) studied the effect of HFCS on rats, who have similar brain chemistry to humans. The rats were trained in a maze for five days before the experimental diet began. The maze had only one exit and contained visual clues so as to help the rats remember the way through the maze to the exit. The rats were separated into two groups, both given HFCS solution as drinking water but one had food fortified with omega-3's. The rats were then tested in the maze 6 weeks after the training period.

It was found that the rats that had been given the omega-3's were much better at finding their way through the maze, indicating that they had remembered the way. However, the rats that had been given only the HFCS had a much reduced ability to find the exit. On closer inspection of the rats brain tissue, it was found that insulin had little or no effect on brain cells in those from the HFCS group. The authors of the study suspect that consuming too much HFCS could block the ability of insulin to regulate how brain cells store sugar for energy requires for processing thoughts.

Professor Gomez-Pinilla said, "The brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats ability to think clearly and recall the route they'd learned six weeks earlier. We're concerned about high-fructose corn syrup that is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative. We're not talking about naturally occurring fructose in fruits, which also contain important antioxidants."

Protection from HFCS by consuming Omega-3
The Omega 3 fatty acids protected the rat's brains from the effects of the HFCS, meaning a less degraded performance in memory. As rats have a similar brain chemistry to humans, it may be good practice to consume more omega-3's in our diet. Good, natural sources of omega-3's are nuts, seeds and oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. Supplements are also available.

HFCS has long been reported on various health websites and even in the mainstream media as being unhealthy for your body. But this study also shows it is equally detrimental to your mind as well. Why is it that an ingredient that is known to have so many harmful effects can still be used in such high quantities in some of the most popular drinks and foods? It is because it is cheap to produce and makes more profit for the corporations that use it. Yet again, profit is the most important goal, even at the expense of the health of consumers. Many of these consumers are, as a result, ending up grossly obese and too mentally impaired to know why their health is suffering.

CAPTION
AP
Rankin Paynter tells LEX18.com he wandered into the K-Mart in Clark County, Ky., before it closed for good, looking for a few good deals. He was curious what would happen to the stuff nobody bought, and a clerk told him "power buyers" take it all.

"Six hours and four cash registers later, Paynter was the proud owner of about $200,000 worth of merchandise, all of which he donated to Clark County Community Services," LEX18 reports.

Paynter, who owns a jewelry exchange business, told the website that he sees plenty of people selling jewelry because of the economic hard times.

"It's bad nowadays. I just told (the clerk) let's just give it away to charity," he told the website.
