HERE'S WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT DISSERTATION

It's another day, the sun is shining, but a lot of students will have no time to see the light of the day. It's that time of the years once more- dissertation time. These are some of the things you would wish to know, but no one is ready to tell you.

Freaking Out

There will be some days during the course when you will freak out. Doubt the entire thesis and choose to start all over again from scratch. You even might come up with a fresh question and began working on it, depending on how extensive the breakdown will last. At some point, you will run out of steam and collapse in a fatigued, tear-stained stack. But unless there are severe faults in your work (improbable) and your superintendent recommends that you were starting again (highly improbable) don't do it. It's only a panic, which will pass.

You can Change your Supervisor

If your dissertation superintendent isn't right, change. If you feel like they are not giving you the right guidance, request for a swap to someone else. Provide your reason early enough; your department will not have any problem with it as long as it is valid. Most universities in the UK do not have any problem with this as they are always ready to help. They do not have to be expert in your field, all that matter is whether they are approachable, reassuring, reliable, give comprehensive feedback and won't mind the odd hours freaked email. They are your lifeline and your right chance for your success.

More Printing

You will do more printing than you have ever done before! Planning Your Time

Your time will not be your own anymore. Even if you are always super organized, plan it well down to the last minute, and you will not experience a single minute of deadline panic. You will realize that the thought of your dissertation will be creeping up on you least expect it. You will fall asleep, dream about it and wake up thinking about it. When not working on it, you will feel guilty and get caught up in self-doubt when you are.  

Don't bother asking friends how far they have gone, you will end up becoming paranoid or they will. Whichever way, you have no time for that. Completing it will be among your greatest achievement. It's worth the hard work knowing you have completed (most likely) the biggest important part of your assignment. Be proud of it.
