Homeopathic Remedies Treat Eczema Relieving Pain, Itching and Inflammation

Eczema is a chronic skin condition whose symptoms consist of scaly patches of skin that sometimes itch. More than 15 million Americans have some form of eczema, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Homeopathic medicine works to relieve eczema by initiating an immune system reaction in the individual to an external stimulus that allows the body to heal itself. Homeopathic remedies can provide relief from eczema symptoms and help reduce the underlying inflammation.

Graphites

Graphites is indicated for people who have a history of skin ailments, according to Dr. William Boericke in the “Materia Medica and Repertory.” The person needing this remedy may have what is known as wet eczema, characterized by oozing sores filled with a honey-yellow, sticky discharge. The sores itch horribly and may be dry, thick scaly areas that become easily inflamed and irritated and exude the sticky discharge. Eczema forms in folds of joints and skin, behind ears, the neck and in the groin. There may be cracks on the skin in the corners of the mouth or on the nipples.

Lycopodium

Lycopodium is indicated for chronic eczema that is associated with urinary and liver problems, according to Boericke. The skin lesions bleed easily and become thick and hard. Eczema may affect the hands and palms, appearing more readily on the right hand and right side of the body; or starting on the right side and migrating to the left. The individual may crave very hot food or drink and notice her eczema symptoms becoming worse around 4:00 – 8:00 in the afternoon and early evening or during the middle of the night.

Natrum Muriaticum

Natrum Muriacicum may be necessary for cases of eczema where eruptions form on the margins of the skin along the hairline and in the bends of the joints. The eruptions are generally crusty in character and can also form behind the ears and in areas where there is hair. In addition, the patches of eczema tend toward being red, painful and inflamed. The person may have greasy-looking skin in areas where there are no eczematous eruptions. Additionally there may be a stubborn sore or crack near the center of the bottom lip which is common for the individual needing this remedy.

Petroleum

Petroleum is indicated for eczema triggered by allergies or extreme sensitivities to fumes from traffic, or industry, says the University of Michigan Health System. Additionally, these people may have used petroleum jelly for skin ailments as they were growing up. The eczema primarily forms on the hands, palms and fingers during colder months, forming cracks in the skin that may bleed and are painful.

Rhus Toxicodendron

Rhus toxicodendron is indicated for eczema in areas of the skin where there are patches of oozing blisters that itch intolerably, similar to poison ivy or oak. The onset of eczema may have occurred due to exposure and contact to an irritating substance, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. The individual may be very restless during an attack and wants to scratch, which should be discouraged. The itching is often made better by warm applications or bathing in warm water.

Using Homeopathic Remedies

For self treatment, pour one or two pellets from the bottle into 4 ounces of distilled or purified water and allow to dissolve. Stir gently with a spoon and take a sniff from the top of the glass. Do not inhale the liquid. This is called an olfactory dose and helps to reduce the incidence of an aggravation or side effects. As long as improvement is noted, do not repeat the remedy. If symptoms reappear, mix another dose and stir vigorously 25 times, then sniff again. If symptoms worsen or are not changed in any way after the second dose, stop the remedy and consult a homeopath.
