If you don't mind getting a little crafty in the shed outside you can save yourself a ton of money with this do-it-yourself wind turbine for only 30 dollars worth of material. This project is based off of the Lenz2 lift+drag design.

This entails using aluminum lithographic offset printing plates to catch the wind. These can be obtained cheaply or sometimes even free from an offset printing company. Other than needing the essential tools such as a hand drill you'll need a pop riveter as well as a menagerie of hardware such as washers, nuts, bolts to create this device.

This device can be built in either a three vane or six vane version. The three vane version being able to withstand up to 80 km/h and up to 105 km/h for the six vane.

It's necessary to have an alternator the rotor as well as a way to store the electricity. Keep in mind this alone won't power an entire home but could be good idea for some sort of project to work on at home.
